The present collection, Sandhini, contains some of my songs. The vast expanse of time, spread over years, places them both far and distant from one another. But in my view, their position is like that of lamps floating on a riverbank. Some of the lamps of a lamp-gift remain on the same bank due to the shallow, slow water, some drift towards the other bank, caught in the ripples created by the breeze, and some continue moving towards some unseen horizon with the undulating current of the midstream. But across these relative distances of the lamps, the benevolent wishes of the one who offered the lamp spread like a microcosm, uniting them in its invisible shadow. My songs are also tinged with the shadow of my faith. The test of human faith cannot be the moment of time, for it is mans self-imposed limitation on time. In fact, their criterion will always be the eternal flow of time, created by the unbroken creation of moments. The name Sandhini, being related to the field of spiritual practice, can also indicate the unity of scattered experiences and the transition from individual consciousness to collective consciousness. - Mahadevi
