Theres no need for a truly (extremely sacred) universally accepted rule to underlie the events that occur within history. Once this realization is reached, it becomes crucial that we find the meaning of creation not in God or history, but in our own moral meaning, and that humans themselves create this morality. Expressing his views on existentialism in an interview included in this book, Nirmal Verma further states that the most valuable thing he learned from that philosophy is that, free from God and history, it is up to man to create meaning and morality; that he himself takes responsibility for determining what is right and what is wrong. Considering his attraction to existentialism as a necessary step in his ideological journey, which began with Marxism, he repeatedly underlines in these interviews his deep sense of responsibility as a writer, a human being, and a citizen. In response to a question about his role in the New Story Movement, he says, My only endeavor was to express my experiences in the most authentic way possible. In addition to discussing his creative process and writing ethics, these interviews also discuss his travels abroad, his pivotal experiences there, literature, art, ideology, and a host of other issues that remain relevant and thought-provoking even today.
