This book is a research-based effort to trace Savarkar from one Savarkar to another. Contrary to popular images of Savarkar, this book attempts to understand his true evolution from a revolutionary to a politician, and then to an ideological representative and pioneer of Hindutva politics. To this end, the author has deeply studied Savarkars own voluminous writings, as well as all the books available on him, contemporary historical sources, documents presented by contemporaries to the British government, and so on. This is not a biography of Savarkar, but an honest attempt to understand and study a broad spectrum of the freedom movement, centering his historical personality. Needless to say, in the current era of invention and propagation of various historical, political, and social distortions under the guise of the concept of nation, such unbiased studies have become extremely necessary. Against the backdrop of historical ambiguities, Ashok Kumar Pandey began his investigation of the truth in his books on Kashmir and Gandhi. This book is the next step in this series, and as such, it is a necessary intervention in the present.
