Description

Savitribai Phule, a great figure who dedicated her life to social unity, education, and womens empowerment, set an example by initiating womens education in India. She was Indias first Dalit female teacher and principal, a poet, and a social worker whose goal was to educate girls. Born on January 3, 1831, into a Dalit family in Naigaon, Satara, Maharashtra, Savitribai Phule is credited with establishing the first farmers school. She performed remarkable work by taking effective initiatives to ensure womens education and rights, securing their rightful place in society, facilitating widow remarriage, eradicating untouchability, and preventing female infanticide. To raise awareness among the untouchable and Dalit communities, she successfully initiated a campaign to educate Dalit girls by opening a school herself, and within a year, she opened five schools in various locations. Her revolutionary husband, Jyotiba Phule, supported her in this endeavor. Savitribai died of the plague while caring for plague-stricken children. The present-day lives of women, educated, civilized, and walking shoulder to shoulder with men, are the result of Savitribais relentless struggles and efforts. She dedicated her entire life to the fight for social consciousness. This excellent book introduces readers to some untouched aspects of the life of Savitribai Phule, a great woman of India.
