When Mrs. Ranjana Chitale was searching for references to the brave Tatya Tope, the question that repeatedly came to my mind was why she chose Tatya Tope for her research. When I learned about Ranjanajis family, I discovered that her family has generations of ties to Tatya Tope and his life. Ranjanajis ancestors were originally from Telangana. Along with others, her ancestors were employed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to strengthen the Hindu empire. Seven generations ago, they were granted a fiefdom of five villages and settled in Pilukhedi. According to family lore, Nana Saheb Peshwa, the immortal hero of the 1857 revolution, breathed his last at this very place. His samadhi is located there. This same family cared for him during his final days. This family actively participated in the revolutionary movement of Sipahi Bahadur Sarkar, and the Shastri family of Pilukhedi used to send rotis made into the hands of the fighters of the 1857 revolution. Ranjana, born into this Shastri family, became Chitale after marriage. I believe that it was with this wisdom and memory that Ranjanaji began to investigate the personality of the brave Tatya Tope.
