Description
Over the past few years, we have witnessed attempts to reshape the image of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh in various ways in the worlds of history, politics, and culture. Bhagat Singh remains a topic of debate among intellectuals and progressives. His court statements, articles, letters, essays, and prison notebooks establish him as a conscious intellectual revolutionary. On the other hand, his highly active revolutionary life, which began in 1925-26 and ended with his execution in Lahore Jail on March 23, 1931, is a turbulent life spanning approximately six to seven years, during which he makes his initial efforts in the dangerous plan to free Ram Prasad Bismil, the Kakori convict, from the gallows. His early activities under the name Balwant Singh were, as it were, rehearsals for his future as a serious revolutionary. After the Kakori executions (1927), Bhagat Singh made a remarkable leap into the world of thoughtleaving his earlier revolutionary movement far behind. I am certainly delighted to place this first volume of memoirs written by Bhagat Singhs comrades, along with all his documents, court statements, letters, drawings, essays, prison notebooks, and archival evidence of his evaluation, into the hands of those who love Bhagat Singh. It is hoped that by presenting these rare recollections, they will not only form a clear picture of Bhagat Singhs life and the revolutionary events of that era, but will also be able to explore his future revolutionary role in confronting the questions of his time.
