Description
The Wounded Dream of Shaldungri reflects the irony of development and the distortions of politics in Jharkhand. The author has witnessed this region intimatelynot as a tourist, but as an active participant in it as a socio-political activist. Therefore, he has effortlessly woven a story that captivates the reader from the very beginningnot in a garish language, but in a vivid way, in a text that occasionally turns pathetic. The novel opens with a minister on a village touraccompanied by a group of officials and journalists, preparations for a spectacle disguised as a cultural event, and an entire society entangled in a web of ambition. As the story progresses, we uncover the many threads of a shocking, inhumane system. The novel depicts the tribal struggle and the political and social turmoil surrounding it, the numerous attempts to respond to massive exploitation, the girls playing hockey and their formidable struggles, and the tragedy of the crushing of an entire cultural consciousness. Manoj Bhakt doesnt simply narrate this tragedy; he also documents the resistance that runs parallel to it. At the end of the novel, we run with the girl running toward the Chief Minister with a hockey stick, and our voices join in the effort to save her. Manoj Bhakt possesses a rich and visual language. He knows how to bring situations to life. But this is not just the power of the language, but also the power of the narrative that Manoj Bhakt allows to unfold on multiple levels in this novel. In the contemporary Hindi world, there are few works that so accurately depict the multifaceted reality of a tribal state. Undoubtedly, this work is capable of carving out its own unique place.
