Description

Shrilal Shukla is as great a satirist as he is a powerful storyteller. His stories have a unique style, often interwoven with a subtle satire. This reveals many more dimensions and implications beyond what the story itself conveys, including the contradictions of life, the inner turmoil of humanity, and the ineffable complexities of the human mind. Shrilal Shukla observed everything from village to city, the ego of the metropolitan upper class to the deep suffering of the lower and working classes, and he kept a keen eye on the inner truths of all. This is why his stories reveal so many diverse forms of reality that it is astonishing. Furthermore, Shrilaljis stories possess so many forms of craft that you can say that in each of his stories, he presents a unique style of craft and a unique style of language. This ability and artistic prowess is seen in very few storytellers. The color of his language in Chhuttiyan and Yeh Ghar Mera Nahi Hai is not there in the stories Lucknow, Kutte Aur Kutte, Yahan Se Wahan or Naseehaten and in the story Ek Din Umrao Nagar Mein, Shrilalji seems to be creating a truly new craft with the playfulness of language. The truth is that Shrilal Shuklas storyteller has not been properly understood. This collection includes a total of fifteen of his stories, each of which has a different color and style and the effort has been to bring every color and style of his storyteller before the readers.
