Description
Sundardas was an early modern Hindi poet who extensively utilized Sanskrit aphorisms, Vedantas philosophical sayings, Brahma-vakyas, and proverbs and idioms from various dialects prevalent in North India in his poetry. Along with the classical Sanskrit tradition, his grasp of the Braj Bhasha ritual poetry is also clearly visible, but he used it in a unique way. For him, self-realization was more important than any philosophy. His poetry is a poem of the search for universal Brahma-truth, and his devotion is a continuous journey. His poetry is also significant because it offers vivid images of the merchant culture of the Marwar region. He gave a new and unique spiritual meaning to the barren desert region, often plagued by famine. There is evidence that his poetry reached beyond the saintly community to the merchant and courtier classes. One of his manuscripts, preserved in the City Palace Museum in Jaipur, bears the seal of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. This book offers a detailed and thought-provoking examination of the history of the Dadupanth movement and its socio-political perspective, as well as the personality and work of Sundardas. In addition to analyzing his craft, poetic vision, and spiritual distinctiveness, it also highlights the folklore of devotion and the elements of early Hindi and its own modernity.
