The deepest depiction of Indias partition and displacement has been found in Urdu fiction, especially in Pakistani fiction. Perhaps the biggest reason for this is that writers who left the mainland still feel the pain of displacement at some level. However, their writing is not limited to the pain of being cut off from a great social culture and heritage, but also attempts to redefine their identity in a new way. The uniqueness of this novel by the renowned Pakistani writer Abdullah Hussain is that its plot is not limited to partition and displacement, but rather the clash of many other identities can be seen in it. The struggle of the traditional society of the Indian subcontinent to transform into a modern society is at its core. The novels narrative spans from shortly before World War I to the events and turmoil of Partition and its aftermath. This vast novel documents three eras: the era of British rule, the struggle for independence, and the post-Partition era. It depicts the changing times of several generations living in India, as well as the changing mindsets of society, civilization, and politics. The protagonist of Uddas Nasleen is not an individual, but three generations caught in the vortex of struggle and suffering that they endure through various periods of contemporary life. The fabric of history is woven around their experiences. It tells the story of two families from urban and rural backgrounds. Naeem and Azra represent two different societies and two opposite sides of mental and emotional concerns. A cycle of process and reaction continues between them. While they cannot be cut off from their roots, as they have become a part of their culture, they certainly undergo a process of transformation. Naeem is a son of the soil by nature and instinct, but through Azra, he is introduced to a life that, to some extent, defies traditional norms. In Naeem and Azras mutual loyalty and intimacy, the element of love is not as important as the spirit of creating unity between two identities and seeking expansion within them. However, its ultimate defeat is heartbreaking. Abdullah Hussain currently lives in Lahore, Pakistan. This much-acclaimed novel of his was first published in Pakistan in 1963. In 1964, it received the Adamji Award.
