Rik means praise. The Rig Veda contains praises for deities such as Indra, Agni, Rudra, the two Ashvins, Varuna, Marut, Savitr, and Surya. The Rig Veda places great importance on harnessing the energies of nature. It contains thousands of hymns (poems) praising the deities. These hymns are composed of various mantras. Chanting these mantras brings well-being to humanity. Sam means song. The Sama Veda contains sung verses. These verses, in their basic form, are composed using the seven notes: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, which form the basis of classical music in India. They aid in the liberation of the soul by awakening the energy centers (chakras) in the human body. The Atharva Veda contains rituals useful for attaining worldly happiness. It describes diseases, how to cure them, sins and their effects, and means of acquiring wealth.The Atharva Veda is more applicable to modern society, as it deals with various subjects such as science, medicine, mathematics, engineering, technology, etc. Yajus means rituals. The Yajur Veda contains various rituals and sacrifices performed to the gods. When a mantra was chanted, and its power was experienced, a certain type of oblation was offered to the respective deity to make the mantra useful. The Yajur Veda describes these oblations offered to the gods through fire.
