Description
The play He Still Calls reveals that the caste problem in India, which should have been eradicated long ago, remains deeply entrenched even in this modern century. And not only is it deeply entrenched, but the elite castes will go to any lengths to maintain its differences. This play, woven by Piyush Mishras deft pen against the backdrop of atrocities against the untouchable caste in Chambal, is so powerful in its plot and the color of the Bundeli dialect that its impact lingers until the end. Thakur Haribhan Singh is so offended by Mangal, an educated young man from the Harijan caste, who calls him Bhauji at the behest of Thakurs wife Sumanti, that he murders him. The eyewitness to this murder is a member of the same community who could have helped win the case, but ultimately turns against him under Thakurs influence. Mangals grandmother, Budho, is deeply hurt by this, and one day she kills Thakur Haribhan Singh, whose father had once murdered Mangals mother because she was so beautiful, with an axe. Set in a rural setting, this play contains many poignant scenes that are difficult to overcome immediatelysuch as the mourning at the cremation ground, the murder of Mangals lover, Kajri, under suspicious circumstances. In its form, Woh Ab Bhi Pukarta Hai is a play that confronts exploitation and atrocities in the name of caste. The author has skillfully answered many questions, and readers will have to use their own discretion to find the answers to those that remain unanswered.
