Description

The fundamental problem when understanding the difference between faith and superstition is that what was praised at one time becomes superstition at another. What one section of society considers superstition is considered sacred by another group. The practice of Sati and the sacrifices offered at fairs were such traditions. This belief of a century ago has now become the category of brutal superstition. This is why beliefs have to be examined. The history of the development of science is a history of examining such beliefs. Copernicus and Galileo examined these beliefs, and even endured torture for expressing their findings. Isnt the history of social reform similar? Considering this, we conclude that examining beliefs and giving those who find them harmful and inappropriate to social life the freedom to organize for peaceful struggle against such beliefs is a great need today. Regarding the eradication of superstition, wise people offer another advice: express disagreement but do not oppose. But social change cannot be limited to mere disagreement. It requires active movement and conscious struggle. In this book, Dr. Narendra Dabholkar has described such struggles in his own words. These movements by Dr. Narendra Dabholkar and his organization against the talking stone, the miracle of the langar, Kamar Ali Darveshs call, Anuradha Devis closed fist, and other such superstitious activities are undoubtedly worth reading.
