Description
Dr. Annie Besant, a leading Theosophist, womens rights advocate, writer, speaker, and India-lover, was born in London in 1847. Her English father was a doctor, and her mother was an exemplary Irishwoman. Annie was deeply influenced by her parents religious views. As a young woman, in 1867, she married a young clergyman, Reverend Frank. By 1870, she had become the mother of two children. Ultimately, she separated from her husband in 1874. She returned to India in 1893, spending most of her time in Varanasi until 1906. In 1907, she was elected to the Theosophical Society. She initiated the work of national renaissance in religious, educational, social, and political spheres. She organized the Home Rule Movement, arguing that political independence was essential for India. Dr. Annie Besant wrote approximately 220 books and numerous articles on Theosophy. In 1895, she published sixteen books and several pamphlets, some exceeding 100 pages. Annie Besant translated the Bhagavad Gita into English. She also edited the periodicals Lucifer, The Commonweal, and New India. She passed away on September 20, 1933.
