Sushil Kumar Modi was a prominent figure in Bihar politics, emerging from the 1974 student movement and securing a place in the forefront with the onset of the 1990s. Beginning his public life as a full-time worker of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Sushil Modi played a key role in the JP-led student movement. During the Emergency, he spent 19 months in various Bihar jails. He has chronicled his experiences in his Jail Diary.In 1990, he began his parliamentary career by being elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He was subsequently elected to the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Council. He served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly for eight years, exposing major scams such as the Animal Husbandry and Tar scams. In 2005, a major change of power saw the formation of the National Democratic Alliance government in Bihar. Sushil Kumar Modi was appointed Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister. He was appointed chairman of the authorized committee of finance ministers from across the country.Sushil Modi wrote on many sensitive issues, including the reservation movement, Urdu politics, Ambedkars inner conflict, the simmering separatism in Kashmir and Assam, the great sacrifices of the Sikh Gurus, and the torture of political prisoners during the Emergency.This book also includes his articles, memoirs, prison diaries, and interesting accounts of his foreign travels.
