It has now been more than 80 months since the Indian National Congress, the veteran of Indian politics, suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the Narendra Modi-led BJP/NDA in the 2014 elections. Five years later, in 2019, Modi led the BJP/NDA to an even bigger victory, although Congress won slightly more seats this time. In an August 2019 India Today survey, 57.5 percent said the Congress was heading for its end, 71.4 percent said Indian voters had decisively rejected dynastic politics, and only 32.6 percent said only a Gandhi could revive the party. In a similar survey conducted in January 2020, 68.2 percent said the Congress was facing its biggest leadership crisis. In August 2020, 55.3 percent of people said that the Congress was nearing its end. But even now, there are no signs of the 135-year-old partys revival. On August 7, 2020, 23 senior leaders rebelled against the Nehru-Gandhi family, demanding elections for various organizations, including the post of party president. Even after so many months, no concrete steps appear to be taken to resolve the partys leadership crisis. The rift between the rebels and the so-called family loyalists continues to haunt the Congress party.
