Description
Dal Mandi is the story of Banaras around the years 1940 to 1942.At a time when British influence was at its peak across India, the desire for freedom from the yoke of British rule was strong in Banaras as well. In Banaras, everyone from kothi to kotha (brothel) jumped into the freedom struggle. The war drum sounded in Pakka Mahal, while the anklets of the courtesans echoed the sounds of revolution in the streets of Dal Mandi. The very same courtesans who had been preserving the cultural and musical heritage of the Banaras Gharana became havens for revolutionary activities. Putting their luxurious lives at stake, these courtesans sacrificed everything for the countrys independence. Dal Mandi explores this untouched aspect of their lives. This story, woven around a love triangle between a Banaras nobleman, his wife, and a courtesan lover, attempts to showcase Banaras in all its grandeur and glory. Many legends associated with Banaras are part of this story. This story is presented to you with the aim of turning the pages of history that have not been covered much. Something was written and not said.Let us dedicate Dal Mandi to the elixir of independence and pay homage to all those who made invaluable contributions to Indias freedom struggle.
