Description
This novel by Suryakant Bali is based on a Vedic love story. Shri Bali, who brought the themes of the Vedic period to readers through his novels in a powerful and highly engaging style, has emerged as the first novelist not only in Hindi but in all Indian languages. This novel is based on the important Vedic poet, Dirghatama. Dirghatama was born blind, but nature compensated for this by making him a highly talented and sensitive poet. The loss of his father before his birth and then his mother soon afterward left him alone. Dirghatamas poetry offers a poignant portrayal of the passionate search for his mother and father. Many women loved him, often described in the Puranas in a very flowery style. But even in a life full of lovers, Dirghatamas yearning for his mothers love remained unquenched, and this search enhanced the beauty and depth of his poetry. Dirghatama, son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala and a contemporary of Bharata, the emperor of Hastinapur, belonged to the Angiras clan. This clan had long-standing ties with the Vaishali dynasty. The Vaishali dynasty ruled in eastern India, establishing its capital on the banks of the river we know today as the Gandak River. This novel is based on the traditions that have preserved Dirghatamas life story. This novel, full of love and philosophy, presents the ashrams, palaces, and everyday lifestyles of the Vedic period in a vivid manner to readers.
