Description

Dhapel is the first Hindi novel that directly documents the horrific struggles of life in the Palamu region, the countrys most drought-stricken, hunger-poverty-stricken, and synonymous with the Valley of Deathwithout any acrobatics or artificial authorial maneuvering. Vast literature has been written on Palamu in Bengali. In the last century, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyays predecessor, Sajiv Chandra Chattopadhyay, wrote the novel Palamu in 1880. Since then, even prominent writers like Mahasweta Devi have consistently written on Palamu. In Hindi, there has been a lack of authentic work based on ground-level experiences. Dhapel effectively fills this void. This novel, centered on the famine and drought of 1993, ultimately becomes not just the story of this particular cursed region, but, by exposing the roots of hunger and poverty, becomes a poignant narrative of our entire country and time. Shyamals authentic and poignant analysis of Mahasweta Devis long-held concern, Palamu is the mirror of poor India, in this first novel, reveals his creative ability and narrative skill. Here, Dhapel is depicted as a terrifying symbol that drains all life forces. Dhapel Baba, who consumes extraordinary amounts of food at the Brahmabhoj held for the peace of the departed soul, ultimately proves dwarfed by the many Dhapels of the system, who are busy siphoning energy from every sphere. This entire story of the collapse of the system is spine-chilling.
