Description
Hanush is a play by Bhisham Sahni that portrays an artists indomitable drive to create and his helplessness. This invaluable play, Hanush, is also a poignant expression of the struggle between social forces, including the nexus of religion and power. Hanush uniquely depicts the artists family tensions. The central role of this play is played by an artist who initially works as a locksmith, but later develops the idea of making a watch, and he begins to work on it. Battling adverse circumstances, he spends seventeen years working tirelessly, and ultimately, as a result of this dedication and hard work, he succeeds in creating Czechoslovakias first clock. His clock is installed on the municipal tower, but what does the artist gain after such immense success? The king has the artists eyes gouged out, preventing him from making another clock like it. From this small incident of Czech history, Bhisham Sahni has given this memorable play to Hindi, which even today, after six decades, appears to be a harmony of reality and wonder for theatre lovers.
