Description
The history of Hindi journalism began with the advent of journalism in India. Printing presses had already arrived in India. A press was established in Bombay in 1674, and in Madras in 1772. At that time, newspapers in Indian languages faced numerous challenges, even as they sought to impart new knowledge to their readers. Along with knowledge, there was also a spirit of social reform. There were differences between new and old-fashioned ideas regarding social reform, which led to the publication of new newspapers. One of the challenges faced by early Hindi editors was ensuring that the language was pure and accessible to all. Indian language newspapers continued to flourish, but some succumbed to the excesses and oppression of the British government and were shut down. Hindi journalism is indebted to those editors and literary figures who dedicated their lives to advancing and improving it. This book briefly remembers them and examines the circumstances under which they served journalism, the overall role of journalism in Indias political and social environment, and its strengths and weaknesses. It is hoped that this will enrich the knowledge of Hindi lovers and discerning Hindi journalists and provide a thorough introduction to the history of Hindi journalism.
