Description
This autobiography by Zohra Sehgal offers a comprehensive look at her nearly hundred-year presence on stage and the silver screen. Equally active in both India and England, Zohra Sehgal paints a fascinating account of her life, from childhood to the present. In 1930, Zohra Apa went to Dresden, Germany, to train in modern dance at Mary Wigmans dance school. This decision was unusual for an Indian young woman from a Nawab family. But Zohra Sehgal is known for her unique approach. She returned in 1933 and joined Uday Shankars renowned Almora theatre group in 1935. Kameshwar Sehgal was also a member of this company, and she married him in 1942. Following her journey during this period, Zohra Sehgal provides an account of her long and profound experience with Prithvi Theatre and Prithviraj Kapoor. Her fourteen years at Prithvi Theatre were at the heart of a significant chapter in Indian theatre. She also witnessed the formation and subsequent dissolution of IPTA from a close perspective. This autobiography contains a very close examination of this entire period. Her subsequent association with BBC Television in England, the British Drama League, and numerous serials and films as an actress, along with accounts of her encounters with prominent figures in British theatre, and her experiences working in Indian serials like Mulla Nasruddin, make this autobiography a particularly interesting read. Furthermore, Zohra Apas witty sense of humor is beyond words.
