Description
Sardar Patel, known as the Iron Man, faced serious difficulties in resolving the sensitive Kashmir issue during his tenure as Indias Home Minister. He believed that the Kashmir issue should not have been taken to the United Nations. In fact, the matter could have been resolved in Indias best interests before it was taken to the United Nations.Sardar Patel was also unwilling to compromise regarding the Hyderabad State. Later, at Lord Mountbattens insistence, he agreed on November 20, 1947, to the Nizams ceding of external affairs, defense, and communications to the Indian government. After the Nizam rejected the proposal for Hyderabads merger with India, Sardar Patel appointed General J.N. Chaudhuri to lead the military operation there and directed him to complete the operation as quickly as possible. Finally, on September 13, 1948, Indian troops arrived in Hyderabad, and within a week, Hyderabad was formally merged with India. The present book authentically highlights the difficulties faced in the way of merger of Kashmir and Hyderabad with India and the indomitable will of Sardar Patel in overcoming them.
