Description

This historical play by the renowned French writer Albert Camus realistically depicts a bombing incident orchestrated by a group of terrorists in revolutionary Russia in 1903. As the author himself stated, Some of the situations in this play are truly historical. All the characters are real, and they behaved exactly as I have described them. Even the name of the protagonist of Justice, Klyayev, is real. This group of extremists, part of the Revolutionary Socialist Party, plotted the assassination of the Grand Duke Serge, the uncle of the Russian Emperor, a plot carried out by Klyayev. However, for the author, what is more important in this entire incident than the Dukes murder is the noble purpose and the human values saved in accomplishing it, which elevate terrorism to the highest ideals of revolutionary activity. Camus gives the greatest importance and detail to the debate between Klyayev and other comrades on this issue. Only a true revolutionary can resolve to preserve human compassion, a sense of justice, and self-respect, even while eliminating the guilty individual who is inextricably linked to an oppressive state system built on social injustice. Kaliayev sacrifices himself for these values, adding another unforgettable chapter to the worlds revolutionary history.
