Description
My ancient name is Pataliputra. I am a world-famous city. As old as I am, my story is equally fascinating and ancient. I was the capital of ancient India for nearly a thousand years. Over time, I nurtured many timeless emperors, kings, warriors, thinkers, scholars, philosophers, saints, social reformers, and politicians, whose indelible mark was felt not only across India but also abroad. I became the capital of the Maurya and Gupta empires. Situated on the banks of the Ganges River, I developed trade and cultural relations with cities outside Pataliputra, including Arab and European countries. I was a major center of Buddhism and Jainism, and the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru and founder of the Khalsa Panth. Today, I am a major pilgrimage site for Sikhs. If we turn the pages of history, we will find that perhaps no other city has witnessed its rise and fall as many times as I have. I was destroyed, rebuilt, settled, and then destroyed again many times. Even today, my old, magnificent buildings, temples, mosques, shrines, and ruins silently tell my story. The conspiracies within palaces for power, the changes in power, the periodic attempts by foreign rulers to establish their dominance over the region, and the subsequent upheaval of the party system agitated me. The result of this is the book The Story of Pataliputra, in the Words of Patna.
