Description

Recognized as one of the finest autobiographies in Hindi, Pinjre Ki Maina is not just the story of one woman, but of an entire era, beginning around 1857 and extending to independent India. Traversing the narrow corridors of socio-political history, it presents a chilling portrait of the suffering of a traditional but highly talented woman. Written in a novelistic framework, this autobiography depicts the joint family, the status of women within it, and marital life, all of which hold sociological significance. Chandra Kiran Ji, with ruthless neutrality, provides a detailed and daily account of how a creative, independent, educated woman maintains her creativity despite traditional family norms, financial problems, and male frustrations, and how she creates a liberal and humane environment for her future generations. Chandra Kiran Saunareksa has been a capable storyteller. A keen mind, keenly aware of the complexities of her time, society, and social and family life, she constantly grappled with the limitations of middle-class womanhood. Yet, she never let her writing cease, nor did she allow her inner humanity to fade, nor did she shirk any of her responsibilities. Regarding her storytelling skills, storyteller and novelist Vishnu Prabhakar said, The fame that Mahadevi achieved in poetry, Chandra Kiran ji achieved in fiction. The realistic portrayal of middle-class women in her stories is perhaps unmatched by any other storyteller. In this autobiography, too, her storyteller is at her full potential. She has presented her story, from her great-grandfathers generation to the present day, in a grand form, with all the contexts and characters.
