Prem Lahari is a love story woven from the threads of imagination and folklore within the larger framework of history. It is not history, nor is it described in any history book. However, different parts or versions of this tale are often heard in folklore. The hero and heroine of this love story are Panditraj Jagannath, Shah Jahans court poet and Dara Shikohs guru, and the Mughal princess Gauharara, also known as Lavangi. Medieval history offers numerous Hindu-Muslim love stories, but this is the only love story of a princess with a Brahmin acharya and poet that takes shape amidst the intrigues of the Mughal court. Gangalhari is a remarkable Sanskrit poem by Panditraj Jagannath, which at times expresses his own love. When the gossip of popular legends is combined with sociology, it reveals a profound truth. This novel has achieved this. Mughal princesses were neither allowed to marry nor fall in love. Therefore, they were compelled to seek romantic happiness secretly. This novel contains some such details. This novel is a fantasy of history, drawing on legends to depict the blossoming of love in the unbridgeable void between two religions and two classes within the medieval power structure.
