Description

This collection of short stories, hand-selected by Ramdhari Singh Diwakar, a master storyteller of rural life, represents his half-century-long narrative journey. Active in fiction writing since the 1970s, Diwakar has intimately understood the transitional rural reality and sought to incorporate it into his stories. The changing rural landscape today is marked by a strange unease. Old notions of the village are crumbling. New values are needed to understand and understand it. The negative aspects of the Panchayati Raj system, including its European approach, violence and counter-violence, corruption, political factionalism, caste animosity, poverty, unemployment, and the migration of laborers, have brought the village to the brink of ruin. Amidst all this, rays of new consciousness also peek through. This democratic new consciousness has given birth to a new optimism among the oppressed and marginalized communities of the village. The most significant development has been the rise of rights consciousness, a sense of identity, and self-respect among Dalit and backward castes. This innovation has dealt a severe blow to the old feudal system. Diwakarjis narrative language, which incorporates village dialect, is intimacy and fluid. His stories will be recorded as authentic documents for understanding the changes and reversals in rural sensibilities since the 1990s.
