Gandhijis Autobiography, published in English, in its original form, and the History of Satyagraha in South Africa included in it, both total approximately 1,000 pages. An attempt has been made to summarize and present the contents of these two books for the first time. This task is not easy, as Gandhijis style is characterized by conciseness. Furthermore, he always says only what is meaningful and significant. Therefore, one must think twice before cutting anything he has written. The modern reader demands a concise version of Gandhijis Autobiography. This abridged edition has been prepared in response to this demand, and for young students in schools and colleges. While this abridged edition will never replace the original, it is certainly hoped that this abridged edition will arouse curiosity in the reader, who will later, when they find leisure time, study the original. An effort has been made to include in this summary all the important events of Gandhijis life, including those whose spiritual significance is why he wrote books. Gandhijis own words have been retained with care. There are also several places where, while abbreviating, words have been changed where necessary; however, even here, care has been taken to ensure that the meanings he has given remain unchanged. Mahadevbhai Desais book My Early Life was particularly useful in the abbreviation.
