Description

The Romance of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table is an abridged narrative from Malorys classic text, Morte DArthur, edited by Alfred W. Pollard. Le Morte dArthur is a compilation by Sir Thomas Malory of traditional tales about the legendary King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, and the Knights of the Round Table. First published in 1485, The Romance of King Arthur is now one of the bestknown works of Arthurian literature; and is here masterfully retold by Alfred Pollard (1859 1944). In his own words, he tried to clear away some of the underwoods that the great trees may be better seen, and though I know that I have cleared away some small timber that is fine stuff in itself, if the great trees stand out the better, the experiment may be forgiven. This edition of The Romance of King Arthur contains a series of dazzling colour and blackandwhite illustrations by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (18671939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackhams artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dreamlike romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate the wonderful ballads of times gone by. Pook Press celebrates the great Golden Age of Illustration in childrens literature a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, childrens stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
